Andrews Kurth Establishes a Presence in China

June 30, 2005

HOUSTON -- Andrews Kurth has established a Representative Office in Beijing, China that has been approved and licensed by China’s Ministry of Justice. The office will provide logistic and personnel support for our work for China-based clients and other clients with business in China, and also will facilitate our marketing, referral and liaison activities focused on China.

Hong Irwin, Of Counsel in the Houston office’s Business Transactions Section, will be resident in the office; she currently is living in Beijing. Tim Unger will be the Partner overseeing the office’s activities.

External investment by Chinese companies and investment in China from overseas are both expanding rapidly, and will continue to do so, creating opportunity for non-Chinese law firms to participate in the expansion. According to The National Law Journal, as of October 2004 an estimated 40 U.S. law firms were working in China. Andrews Kurth has as clients a number of Chinese firms with offices in Beijing and Hong Kong, including Sinopec, China Oilfield Services Limited and Asia Frize Ltd.

For more than a century, Andrews Kurth LLP has built its practice on the belief that “straight talk is good business.” Real answers, clear vision and mutual respect define the firm’s relationships with clients, colleagues, communities and employees. With more than 400 lawyers and offices in Austin, Dallas, Houston, London, Los Angeles, New York, The Woodlands and Washington, DC, Andrews Kurth represents a wide array of international clients in all areas of business law.
