Andrews & Kurth and The 100 Club Announce Plans for Annual Corporate Donation Program

December 3, 2002
HOUSTON -- Andrews & Kurth and The 100 Club announced plans to establish an annual corporate donor program. Andrews & Kurth, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary, today presented a $25,000.00 check to begin the program.

“As part of our anniversary, the firm is making a conscious effort to put something back into the community,” said Bob Jewell, managing partner of the firm’s Houston office. “This is not a one-time donation,” said Jewell. “We will be working with this worthy organization to help it establish a corporate donor program. Hopefully, this will jump start some initiatives that would not otherwise be possible. We will assist The 100 Club in not only building membership on a corporate level but also with other special projects geared toward the business community.”

Organized in 1953, The 100 Club has collected and dispersed over $16,000,000 to surviving families, purchased special equipment, funded officer education, and initiated awards programs all benefiting the law enforcement and firefighting community in Houston and surrounding counties. To date, The 100 Club has provided families with gifts in excess of $4,000,000.

“This initial donation by Andrews & Kurth is a tremendous boost to our organization,” said Rick Hartley, executive director of The 100 Club. “So many of our members are individuals but we have not always targeted the business community for support. This will allow us to move forward with those efforts and continue to provide for our law enforcement and firefighting community.”

Andrews & Kurth L.L.P., founded in 1902, is based in Houston, has 375 lawyers and, in addition to its Houston office has offices in Austin, Dallas, Los Angeles, London, New York and Washington D.C. The firm has also made significant contributions to similar charitable organizations in other cities where it has offices. The firm’s practice areas include appellate, bankruptcy, business transactions, energy, environmental, corporate and securities, labor and employment, litigation, intellectual property, public law, project finance, real estate, structured finance, asset securitization, technology and tax law for U.S. and international clients.

The 100 Club was organized in 1953 by Leopold L. Meyer, Ray R, Elliot, R.H. Abercrombie, William A. "Bill" Smith and Jim "Silver Dollar" West. One hundred people who contributed $100 each formed the initial base. Today membership exceeds 18,000. The mission of The 100 Club is to provide financial assistance to dependents of peace officers and firefighters who lose their lives in the line of duty; to provide life protecting equipment which cannot be secured through regular channels and to provide law enforcement officers with educational and life preserving programs. The first life-protecting equipment - bullet-proof vests - was given to law enforcement in 1977. Since then, The 100 Club has provided a variety of special equipment to various local law enforcement agencies. Several hundred officers have benefited from scholarship and other educational opportunities provided through The 100 Club.
