Houston, Texas

(Houston, Texas)—Andrews Kurth is pleased to announce that Robin Russell, Houston Office Managing Partner, was honored with the 2016 Akard Award from the Bankruptcy Section at the Texas State Bar Convention held in Fort Worth, Texas on June 16-17, 2016.

The Akard Award recognizes one attorney each year for his or her outstanding achievement and service in the field of bankruptcy.

The Akard Award is named in honor of its first recipient, Honorable John C. Akard, in recognition of his tireless and longstanding dedication to the legal profession in the field of bankruptcy. Judge Akard served the bankruptcy community for over 40 years as a trustee, judge and advisor to the profession. In honor of Judge Akard’s service, the Bankruptcy section established the Akard Award in 2009 to honor a member of the Texas bankruptcy bar whose service to both the bar and the community is exemplary.

Ms. Russell is the co-chair of the firm’s Bankruptcy and Financial Restructuring section and serves as a member of numerous firm committees, including the Policy and Finance Committees. Her practice combines a depth of experience in bankruptcy restructuring and litigation with financial transaction work. She represents clients throughout the U.S. in corporate restructurings and reorganizations and provides strategic advice to corporate clients and independent boards on the legal risks associated with counterparty insolvency and the structuring of corporate acquisitions to minimize economic risks in the event of a counterparty’s subsequent financial distress.

Cited as a leading lawyer in her field by numerous legal and trade publications, Ms. Russell is listed as one of Chambers USA’s Leading Business Lawyers in Bankruptcy and Restructuring, among The Best Lawyers in America® and a Texas Monthly “Super Lawyer.” She is an elected fellow in the American College of Bankruptcy, and in 2011 was named by the National Diversity Council as one of the Most Powerful and Influential Women in Texas. She is a frequent speaker on legal ethics, secured lending, bankruptcy and other financial topics and is the author of numerous books and articles.

Ms. Russell is a member of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society of the United Way and the Texas Bar Foundation and serves as an advisory member of multiple charitable boards. This year, Robin was recognized as a "Women Who Mean Business" Finalist by the Houston Business Journal. In 2015, she was recognized as one of "Houston’s 50 Most Influential Women of 2014” by Houston Woman Magazine, and in 2014, she received the Louise B. Raggio Award from the State Bar of Texas Women and the Law Section. Robin began practicing law at Andrews Kurth following a Texas Supreme Court clerkship. She received her J.D., cum laude, from Baylor University School of Law in 1986 where she was the highest ranking graduate and Editor-in-Chief of the Baylor Law Review.
